Disclaimer: You must be aware that this is our first experience with an organized ride in this part of South America, and that you are invited to participate because you have demonstrated a love for adventure, and have proven skills to handle an unexpected situation. If you choose to join us, we may be subject to unexpected delays, wrong turns, backtracking, and an extra dose of adventure due to the nature of “scouting.” Please Note: The group size will be seven to nine riders – no more, no less.

Although this special event has certainly been thoroughly planned out, our efforts on this trip will be to discover and experience the most interesting places to visit during scheduled tours to this location in years to come.

Keith R. Ball, editor and owner of Bikernet.com, the oldest and most read online V-twin motorcycle magazine, has acquired TrikeRidersNow.com, an online magazine covering the three-wheeled industry. Genevieve Schmitt launched TrikeRidersNow.com in 2009. She is also the editor and owner of WomenRidersNow.com. Schmitt and Ball have joined together to create the Bikernet online portal where visitors can find 4 online motorcycle magazines: Bikernet, Bikernet Trikes (formerly Trike Riders Now), Bikernet Baggers, and Women Riders Now. This creates the largest family of motorcycle Web sites.

“I am excited to add trikes to the Bikernet family,” said Keith R. Ball. “The trike market is one of the fastest growing segments of the powersports industry. That, along with our new bagger site and Genevieve’s Women Riders Now site, will provide online motorcycle enthusiasts all the information they want from one family of Web sites. More importantly, we can offer advertisers opportunities to reach a wider variety of readers online.”

“I couldn’t have found a better person than Keith to take over Trike Riders Now at this time,” said Genevieve Schmitt. “By handing over the reins to Keith and his staff, I can focus on expanding WomenRidersNow.com, which in its seven years of existence has firmly planted itself as the leader in motorcycling news, reviews and information aimed at women.”

While Ball becomes the new owner of Trike Riders Now, Women Riders Now is still completely owned by Schmitt. However, by being part of the Bikernet family of sites and cross-linking them to each other, advertisers have greater opportunities to target their campaigns.

You can access the sites through their respective URLs or through the portal URL, www.Bikernet.com .

The Sturgis Buffalo Chip, the legendary campground, concert and entertainment venue has announced development of a new commercial and entertainment area named the “Crossroads at the Buffalo Chip”. The Crossroads development at the Buffalo Chip will be located three miles outside of Sturgis and will provide visitors a Free access area at the Chip where visitors will be able to visit friends, vendors; enjoy food, drinks and music while finding a much-needed relief from the traffic in the town of Sturgis.

“There has long been a need for a complete motorcycle rally park with free admission that’s easy to get to, provides access to industry displays and vendors and has ample and easily accessed free parking. It’s been planned for years and I am delighted that the Crossroads will be open during the 2012 Sturgis Rally,” explains Rod Woodruff, owner of the 560 acre Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “The Crossroads gives the Sturgis Rally visitor and general public the opportunity to come to the Chip to look at custom bikes, shop, view new products, get motorcycle mechanic work done, enjoy good food, full bar service, beautiful dancers, live musical entertainment, and just hang out and meet some friends without having to pay an admission fee.”

Information for Sturgis Rally vending, concert and campground reservations at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip is available at www.buffalochip.com and 605-347-9000.

Showing that bikers really do care, on Sunday, January 22nd 800 motorcyclists rolled into Orlando Harley-Davidson for the police escorted Tri County Chapter of BIKERS AGAINST CHILD ABUSE (BACA) ride along Interstate 4. An after-party event was also held at the Orlando Harley-Davidson Historic Factory Dealership with live music by The Pendletones, entertainment and food.

Participants raised $8,100 to support the Tri County Chapter of BACA , but their true goal was to create awareness of their organization and its services, which is to provide a safer environment for abused children by involving them with an established, united organization that is prepared to lend its physical presence and emotional support in order to shield children from further abuse.

“We are honored to have teamed up with BACA in an effort to put an end to child abuse,” said Anne Deli, President of Orlando Harley-Davidson. “We were happy to provide motorcycle enthusiasts with an opportunity to support BACA by raising awareness for this worthy cause. It was a fun and meaningful day!”

The Tri County Chapter of BACA helps abused children in Central Florida by involving them with an established, united organization that is prepared to lend its physical presence and emotional support in order to shield them from further abuse.

“This ride provided an opportunity to bring riders from all over the world to support one major and very important cause: helping to create awareness of the struggle to put an end to child abuse,” said Brook “Grumpy” Fay, the Tri County President of BACA. “No child should live in fear and we want the community to know that we are here to help.”

On the heels of bikers adjusting to the laws and restrictions in Myrtle Beach, now the ‘Official” Harley Spring Rally is planning on moving its dates. This rally will now run from May 18 through May 28, according to Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson’s website. This means it will still be going on when the Atlantic Beach Bike Fest happens. According to the site, the 72nd annual “Cruisin’ the Coast” rally will include more events, rides, parties, races and vendors.

Adding to the confusion is that the local officials that issue vending permits say the permits for the rallies were issued for these dates: Harley Rally, May 14 – 20; Memorial Day Bikefest, May 24 – 27. Businesses in the area are now touting that there will be 2 separate rallies happening over 3 weekends. Put it this way, if you are going to be there sometime in May you’ll find a rally, somewhere.

If you are heading to Daytona for Bike Week and were planning on stopping in St. Augustine to get a souvenir T-shirt you better stock up. Pretty soon Harley-Davidson of St. Augustine will be no more. The dealership on Florida 16 just off Interstate 95 will stop selling motorcycles at the end of this month. It and the small shop on St. George Street will stay open another month or two while they sell off the last of its accessories and clothes. The dealership had employed 20 people. Riders in the area will then have to either go 30 miles north to Jacksonville or 40 miles south to Daytona Beach to find a Harley dealership. St. Augustine has had a Harley dealer since 1946.

A California jury in El Cajon has awarded a man $7.5 million in a lawsuit for injuries he suffered in a motorcycle crash Aug. 30, 2007 in San Diego. The injuries occurred when the driver of an auto dealer’s courtesy shuttle van made a left turn into the path of the motorcyclist. The collision caused the rider to be thrown over the handlebars and when he landed he suffered fractures and crushing injuries to his pelvic area. Doctors were able to successfully do reconstructive surgery but the procedures left the victim permanently ‘dismembered’ by more than an inch.

Since the accident the victim’s wife has divorced him and his doctors are unsure if he will be able to have children due to the injuries. His lawyer states, “It’s going to affect his relationships and his self-esteem in the future.” Talk about pain and suffering. A spokesperson for the car dealer, the main defendant in the suit, said they will appeal the verdict. BTW, the driver of the van at the time was allegedly a non-U.S. citizen with an expired driver’s license who had never been trained as a shuttle driver.

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety has released its 2012 Roadmap to State Highway Safety Laws. This is their annual report card that grades all 50 states and Washington DC on whether they adopt 15 basic traffic safety laws recommended by the Advocates. This year’s report focused on the state fiscal impact of highway safety gaps. Among the 15 model laws evaluated by the Advocates for the 2012 report were seat belt, booster seat and motorcycle helmet measures. Plus restrictions and requirements for teen drivers, all-driver texting bans and tougher impaired driving laws.

The states got 1 of 3 ratings: Green (Good); Yellow (Caution, needs improvement) and Red (Danger, state is behind) based on how many of the 15 optimal laws they have. States were given ratings was based on whether or not they had adopted a law defined in the Advocates report. Highway safety education or enforcement programs were NOT considered in the evaluations.

In 2011 Washington DC and 17 states; New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, North Carolina, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Washington, Delaware, Maine, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Louisiana, and California rated in the highest rated category; Green. The worst rated states, Red, were South Dakota, Arizona, Mississippi, Virginia, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, and Wyoming. All other states were rated as Yellow, indicating they need improvement in traffic safety laws. 2 states; Maine and Rhode Island, improved from Yellow to Green while 2 other states; North Dakota and Pennsylvania were upgraded from Red to Yellow.

In 2011, 13 states enacted a total of 16 of the Advocates’ recommended highway safety laws. Here are the states and the laws passed: Primary Enforcement of Seat Belts, Rhode Island; Booster Seats (children ages 4 through 7), California and Georgia; Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) for teen drivers, New Mexico (optimal cell phone restriction), North Carolina (supervised driving), North Dakota (nighttime and optimal cell phone restrictions) and Pennsylvania (passenger restriction); Impaired Driving, Connecticut (ignition interlock devices for all offenders) and Kansas (ignition interlock devices for all offenders); All-Driver Text Messaging Restriction: Indiana, Maine, Nevada, New York (upgraded to primary enforcement), North Dakota and Pennsylvania.

The Advocates still have states needing to pass more laws including: 18 need an optimal primary enforcement seat belt law; 30 need an optimal all-rider motorcycle helmet law; 21 need an optimal booster seat law; 45 and D.C. need critical impaired driving laws; and 18 need an all-driver text messaging restriction. None of the states meets all the criteria of Advocates’ recommended GDL program and no state enacted an all-rider motorcycle helmet law, 13 attempted to repeal existing laws.

The National Transportation Safety Board reports that in 2010, nearly 33,000 people died in crashes throughout the nation and over 2 million more were injured. Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety is a coalition of insurance, consumer, health, safety and law enforcement organizations that work together to advance state and federal highway and vehicle safety laws, programs and policies. The complete 2012 Roadmap to State Highway Safety Laws can be found at www.saferoads.org .

Robert Nolan is hoping he can have his cake and eat it too. You see he owns Thoroughbred Harley-Davidson in Florence, Kentucky and plans to move it to a loacation where a car dealership used to be. This would enable him to increase the size of his shop. It would also allow him to share a parking lot with a planned Quaker Steak and Lube restaurant. Now if you don’t know about the Quaker Steak and Lubes they are a motorsports themed chain of restaurants that features chicken wings. The first “Lube” was/is in a former gas station in Sharon, Pennsylvania, with a car still on the lift rack.

The joint venture is the result of three years of planning, but before the project at 8025 Action Boulevard can proceed the Boone County Planning Commission and the city of Florence have to approve the signage request for the location. After the public hearing Nolan felt confident the project will get the go ahead. He feels that having the two franchises close together would create a destination for motorsports enthusiasts since both host multiple events. If approved the H-D dealership will move into its building after renovations are completed. The “Lube” will open later in a brand new building.

Tomorrow is Friday the 13th. If you’re not superstitious then you probably don’t give it a thought. But if you’re a biker up in Canada the day holds a special significance to you. That’s because there will be a motorcycle rally in Port Dover, Ontario. That’s right there will be bikers show up in Port Dover for the Friday the 13th Rally no matter what the weather.

The rally started with a group of friends riding and meeting on Friday, November 13, 1981. They vowed that every Friday the 13th they would meet. Tomorrow marks the 52nd time for the rally. BTW there are 3 Friday the 13ths this year. The others are in April and July. If you’ve never been to it, it is a blast. But if you’re going tomorrow you better wear your mukluks and toques because the high is only going to be 32* with winds of 22 mph and snow.

Darwin Motorcycles, aka Brass Balls Cycles, has announced it is going to be producing another new motorcycle to its lineup. In 2010 BBB introduced the Brawler GT, an FXR inspired sport cruiser, which placed 2nd in AMD World Championships (production class). It was also named Cycle Source Magazine Production Custom Bike of 2010. In 2011 BBB developed the RLX, an American Muscle Bike that placed 1st in AMD World Championships (production class). It is being raffled with all proceeds to support our troops.

Now in 2012 Dar Holdsworth and the folks at BBB are doing the unthinkable. They are building The Rocketeer F3. The original Rocketeer was featured in the December 2010 issue of IronWorks. The F3 production custom bike is equipped with tanks and fenders machined from solid 6061-T6 Billet Aluminum, plus its loaded with other exclusive components. The Rocketeer F3 will be an epic, timeless machine. To get more info go to www.brassballsbobbers.com/ . Remember BBB only produces 100 machines per year and they have a waiting list so you better act soon.

Steve Broyles from Stevenson’s Cycle took top honors at the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in Detroit over the weekend. He built the GL Special based on a number of ideas that he had in the back of his mind from the Schwinn Flyer he rode as a kid. An S&S 93ci mill with polished split rocker boxes gives the bike a heart. You can see that reflected in the wide handlebars. Broyles used Schwinn style wide handlebars and one of his signature glass side oil tanks along with brass foot and hand controls. The frame is a custom fabricated rigid bobber unit. The GL Special also sports an Evil LSD Belt Drive. The attention grabbing paint was sprayed by Darren Williams of Liquid Illusion Art.
